Why sales are so important

for small business owners

In Discussion With Andy Foot of Project Steps

In discussion with Andy Foot, Owner of Project Steps UK.

Sales is the lifeblood of all SMEs yet once they get past the initial momentum, sales flatline and the business struggles to generate the new business needed to fund building a team, implementing systems and rewarding the owner.

The owner either becomes too busy to get round to selling due to all the other activities involved in growing a business or shies away from selling because they fear rejection or are just simply not good at sales.

In this discussion with Andy, we explore why SME leaders get sales so wrong, why sales is important and what they need to be doing in this space to build and convert a pipeline of high quality business.

Meet Gary & Andy...

After over 25 years in high-growth businesses delivering results at a senior level, Gary knew he could use his skills to help SMEs.

A straight-talking, no-nonsense Yorkshire man, he now helps business owners to have the freedom to choose how, when and where they work through a range of online and in-person programmes.

Having turned around his business and his lifestyle as a result, Gary now runs two successful businesses and it’s this experience he uses to help other entrepreneurs ditch the guilt, start earning what they are worth, and creating the ability to make choices about how they spend their time.

He creates what many hard-working business owners are missing – the freedom to choose.

Gary holds a key role in the Association of Business Mentors in the UK and regularly engages business and university audiences about building the right business to give freedom and choice.

Andy is an experienced Business Development Director, with proven success in delivering operational, sales, and business growth.

Starting as an apprentice, moving into sales initially within retail then moving on to B2B sales in various sectors such as: capital goods, commercial interiors, software, media, and radio.

Working his way up from the shop floor through field sales, key account management, sales management to sales director roles and company ownership, gave Andy an in-depth knowledge of how a business works.

“Andy’s remit from day one was to establish a team to deliver a £5.0 million business (from £0.5m), with the structure to develop for future profitable growth. This has been achieved and it is my pleasure to thank Andy for all his support and leadership, in delivering the agreed goals for the business and to recommend him.”
